How To Clean and Tidy Your Room
or Help! Where's My Bed?
This is what you need:
A black bin liner
A cleaning cloth (J cloth)
A washing up bowl ( buy one for yourself rather than pinching the one from the kitchen)
Empty files, folders or some filing trays
A washing basket ( a really large carrier bag will do, or a bin liner). See pictures on this link:

A mug, jar or other container for pens

This is what you do:
1 Switch off your computer if possible or at least turn off the monitor unless you are reading this! You don't want to be distracted for at least an hour. Turn off your mobile phone.
2 Put on some music to work by. You need something energising and upbeat to keep you alert and moving.
3 Collect all your dirty dishes, cups etc from your room and put them into your washing up bowl. You can put them in the kitchen if they are not in the way but don't attempt to wash them yet as you may get distracted from the real task in hand.
4 Now pick up any clothes that may be lying around. Put dirty ones into the washing basket/carrier bag/bin liner. Hang up skirts, shirts, dresses and trousers if possible (make a note to buy more hangers if necessary). Fold up underwear etc and put away in drawers. Put away shoes if possible or at least put them together in pairs.
5 Empty your bin into a bin bag and pick up any other litter from your desk, floor and bed. Don't take the bin bag to the skip yet - you may meet someone and get distracted.
6 Now for the rest of the desk. Put any books you are not using in the bookcase.
7 Collect together all your pens and put them into your pen mug/jar.
8 Begin to sort through all the papers on your desk. Mark a file/folder/tray BILLS ETC and put into it all your admin stuff, bills, receipts, bank statements and anything official. You can sub- divide it later but not now.
9 Mark another file/folder/tray PERSONAL and put all your love letters, cards and leaflets you want to keep. Throw away anything that you don't want.
10 Mark another file/folder/tray UNI WORK and put into it any current assignments you are working on.
11 Make sure you have a labelled file for each of your modules and put in them any handouts and marked assignments. You will need to make sure everything in your files is in the correct order but don't do it now.
12 What's left on the desk? Can it be thrown, filed or put away on a shelf or in a drawer? You should now have a TIDY DESK! The end is in sight!
13 Look around at the other surfaces in your room, your bedside table, shelves, window ledge. Can you tidy and sort these areas in a similar way?
14 Assuming all is tidy you can do some cleaning. Take a cleaning cloth and wipe all the surfaces ie desk, bedside table, window ledge, shelves. You may find some nasty, sticky patches so:
15 Damp your cloth with water or use a multi purpose spray and wipe again, rubbing the sticky/dirty bits to clean.
16 Fetch the vacuum cleaner and vacuum everywhere. Oops! Did you forget the rubbish under the bed? Don't leave it there! Sort/throw/file it!
17 Now you can finish off by taking the rubbish to the skip and washing your dirty dishes in the kitchen.
18 Well done! You deserve a treat! Have a cup of tea/ go out with friends/ visit a chat room/ have a huge piece of chocolate cake.
Now that you know how to clean your room you can keep it that way! Make sure you do it every week or preferably keep it tidy by not allowing things to mount up. Set a time every day to quickly tidy for 5 minutes.
This video clip shows you a fun way to do it!
